Supply Chain Decarbonisation & Scope 3 Programmes
Category screening, supplier segmentation, primary data capture and procurement levers that turn Scope 3 from an estimate into a managed reduction programme.
Why this work is worth doing properly
For most organisations, the majority of emissions sit outside the fence line, in a value chain they influence but do not control. Scope 3 is therefore the hardest number to produce but one that can move the total meaningfully. Orvita runs it as a procurement programme with an emissions outcome, not as a data request that arrives once a year and is ignored.
Getting past the spend-based estimate
Almost every Scope 3 inventory begins with spend-based factors, and it should: screening all fifteen categories quickly is the right way to find out where the tonnes are. The problem is stopping there. A spend-based figure moves only when you buy less, so it cannot register a supplier switching to renewable power, changing a material, or improving a process. Reduction work becomes invisible in the very number it is meant to improve.
The transition to activity and supplier-specific data has to be selective. Emissions concentrate heavily, and in a typical base a small minority of suppliers carry the large majority of the footprint. We segment the supplier base by emissions contribution, contract leverage, switching feasibility and data maturity, then design the engagement around that segmentation rather than sending the same questionnaire to everyone.
An engagement programme suppliers will actually complete
The strategic tier receives a direct, supported request for primary product or facility data, with templates, a defined methodology and technical help where their own capability is thin. The middle tier receives a light structured request focused on a handful of decisive fields. The long tail stays on improved secondary factors, refined by material, geography and process rather than by broad spend category.
We build the request into the commercial relationship: prequalification criteria, tender scoring, contract clauses and supplier scorecards, so the data has a reason to arrive and improvement has a reason to continue. Collected data is quality-scored on the same basis as the rest of your inventory, so a supplier figure is never treated as more certain than it is.
The output is a value chain baseline you can defend, a reduction pathway with named supplier actions, and a tracking process that shows year on year whether engagement is producing tonnes or only correspondence.
Deliverables
Every engagement ends in documents your team, your auditor and your lender can all use.
Fifteen-category Scope 3 screening
A fast, complete screen that identifies where value chain emissions genuinely concentrate before effort is committed.
Supplier segmentation model
Vendors ranked by emissions contribution, leverage, switching feasibility and data maturity to target engagement precisely.
Tiered engagement programme
Templates, methodology guidance and supplier support designed for response rates rather than for completeness of the question set.
Primary data collection and validation
Supplier-specific emissions data captured, checked for plausibility and quality-scored alongside your own figures.
Procurement lever design
Prequalification criteria, tender scoring weights, contract clauses and scorecards that embed carbon in buying decisions.
Value chain reduction pathway
Named supplier actions with expected abatement, tied to your SBTi Scope 3 target and CSRD value chain disclosure.
Four stages, no black boxes
You see the method, the sources and the workings at every step.
- 01
Screen the value chain
All fifteen categories are quantified quickly if relevant so the programme starts where the emissions actually are.
- 02
Segment the supplier base
We rank suppliers by contribution and leverage, and decide who receives a full request, a light request or a better factor.
- 03
Run the engagement
Requests go out through the commercial relationship with templates and support, and returned data is validated and scored.
- 04
Embed and track
Carbon criteria move into procurement process, and progress is tracked annually against a defensible baseline.
Standards and frameworks we work to

Scope 3 questions, answered
Why move from spend-based to supplier-specific data?
Spend-based factors are useful for a first screening and almost useless for reduction, because they fall only when you spend less. Once you switch to supplier-specific data, a genuine improvement by a supplier shows up in your inventory, which means procurement decisions and engagement work finally register in the number. It also matters for SBTi Scope 3 targets and for CSRD value chain disclosure.
How do you get suppliers to respond?
By asking few, well-targeted questions of the suppliers that matter and making participation easy. We segment the base so effort concentrates on the small share of vendors carrying most of the emissions, tier the request by supplier maturity, provide templates and support, and route the ask through the commercial relationship rather than as an anonymous survey. Response quality rises sharply when the request is short, relevant and clearly linked to the contract.
Which Scope 3 categories usually matter most?
For most manufacturers and retailers, category 1 purchased goods and services dominates, often followed by upstream transport, use of sold products and capital goods. For services businesses the balance shifts toward business travel, employee commuting and purchased services. We screen all fifteen and then concentrate the work where the tonnes actually are.
What this is usually paired with
Most engagements draw on two or three service lines at once, because the evidence base is shared.
Tell us what you are measuring, reporting or trying to prove
A short conversation is usually enough to tell you whether supply chain emissions & decarbonisation strategy is the right starting point, what it would involve, and what it would cost. If it is not, we will say so.
