Carbon Footprint & GHG Inventory Services
Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions quantification, life cycle assessment and audit-ready greenhouse gas reporting, built under the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064 and ISO 14067.
Why this work is worth doing properly
Everything else in sustainability depends on these figures being right. Targets, disclosure, green finance, procurement scores and abatement plans are all downstream of this inventory, which means an inventory built on guesswork quietly corrupts every decision that follows it. Orvita builds carbon footprints that hold up when someone senior, or an auditor, asks where a figure came from.
The problem with most carbon footprints
Most organisations already have a number. The difficulty is that nobody can reconstruct it. It came out of a spreadsheet built by someone who has since left, it used a factor whose vintage is unknown, and the boundary shifted halfway through the year when a new site was acquired. The number is not wrong so much as unusable: it cannot be defended, compared year on year, or handed to a verifier.
Operationally complex businesses have it harder still. Tourism, shipping, agriculture, remote industrial sites and off-grid operations generate emissions that generic software was never designed to see: diesel burned by contractor equipment, fugitive methane, process emissions, biogenic streams that must be reported separately, and a supply chain that answers questions slowly if at all.
How Orvita builds an inventory
We start with the boundary, because that is where most disputes originate. We agree the consolidation approach, operational or financial control, list every entity and facility inside it, and record what has been excluded and why. Then we map the activity data you already hold, fuel cards, meter reads, purchase ledgers, fleet telematics, weighbridge tickets, procurement spend, against the emission sources they represent.
Each line item is calculated with a named emission factor from a recognised source such as IPCC, DEFRA, or IEA, with its vintage and geography recorded alongside it. Where primary data does not exist, we say so explicitly, model the gap with the best available method, and score it. Nothing is silently averaged. The result is an inventory in which actual measurement and reasoned estimate are always distinguishable.
Where a product-level answer is needed for a customer or a tender, we extend the same dataset into a cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave life cycle assessment under ISO 14040 and 14044, and a product carbon footprint under ISO 14067, without rebuilding the underlying data.
Deliverables
Every engagement ends in documents your team, your auditor and your lender can all use.
Full three-scope GHG inventory
Scope 1, Scope 2 dual-reported location and market based, and every material Scope 3 category, with a documented organisational and operational boundary.
Emission factor register
Every factor used, with source, vintage, geography and unit, so the calculation can be reproduced years later by someone who was not there.
Data Quality Score per line item
Reliability, temporal relevance, geographic specificity and methodological rigour scored on each figure, so you know exactly which numbers to improve first.
Life cycle and product footprints
ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067 assessments for the products or services your customers are asking about, drawn from the same verified dataset.
Audit-ready evidence pack
Source documents, calculation workings and boundary rationale organised the way a verification body expects to receive them.
Base year and recalculation policy
A stated base year with a written policy for structural change, so acquisitions and disposals do not invalidate your trend.
Four stages, no black boxes
You see the method, the sources and the workings at every step.
- 01
Scoping and boundary
We agree the consolidation approach, the reporting period and the entity list, then write the boundary down so it stops being a matter of opinion.
- 02
Data capture
We collect activity data from the systems you already run, and design a light collection route for whatever is missing rather than asking for a new reporting burden.
- 03
Calculation and quality scoring
Each source is quantified against a named factor, scored for data quality, and cross-checked against physical plausibility and prior periods.
- 04
Reporting and assurance support
You receive the inventory, the evidence pack and the improvement plan, and we stay with you through third-party verification if you are seeking it.
Standards and frameworks we work to
The methodologies your clients, auditors, regulators and lenders already recognise.
Accounting questions, answered
What is included in a corporate carbon footprint?
A complete corporate footprint covers Scope 1 direct combustion and fugitive emissions, Scope 2 purchased electricity, heat and steam reported on both location-based and market-based methods, and the fifteen Scope 3 categories that apply to your operations. Orvita delivers all three scopes with a documented boundary, a stated base year, an emission factor register and a Data Quality Score on every line item.
How long does a first GHG inventory take?
For a single-site operation with reasonable records, a first inventory is typically complete in four to six weeks. Multi-site groups and businesses with a long supplier tail usually run eight to twelve weeks, with the extra time spent almost entirely on Scope 3 primary data collection rather than on calculation.
Will the inventory pass third-party verification?
It is built to. We prepare inventories to ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard with a full audit trail from source document to reported tonne, which is exactly what an assurance provider asks for. We also support you through the verification itself, answering auditor queries and closing findings.
What this is usually paired with
Most engagements draw on two or three service lines at once, because the evidence base is shared.
Tell us what you are measuring, reporting or trying to prove
A short conversation is usually enough to tell you whether carbon footprint is the right starting point, what it would involve, and what it would cost. If it is not, we will say so.
